A FIXED CAGE (185) is a structure of a certain size, usually 20 feet, equipped with top corner brackets that allow it to be lifted by means of a spreader. Its design provides the stevedores with a wide and clear space from which they can open the twistlocks in a controlled and safe manner, always working on a stable platform. This cage moves ABOVE the rows of containers.
A GONDOLA CAGE (323) fulfils the same basic function, but incorporates a telescopic system from 20 to 45 feet which, once lifted by the spreader, allows the stevedores to position themselves BETWEEN the columns of containers. This facilitates easier, more direct and ergonomic access to the twistlocks.
